How to Compress a PDF to 100KB
Short answer: To compress a PDF to 100KB for free, open TheEditPDF's Compress tool, choose your PDF, pick the strongest compression level, and download the result. Most of a PDF's bulk is images, not words, so compression shrinks those images and strips out wasted data. Your file never leaves your device, and you should open the compressed file once to check that the text is still readable.
Email attachments, job portals and government forms often reject PDFs over a size limit — and 100KB is one of the most common cutoffs. A scanned document or a report full of images can easily be ten or fifty times that size, even when the text itself would fit in a fraction of it.
The good news is that most of that bulk is images, not words. Compressing a PDF shrinks those images and strips out wasted data, and with TheEditPDF's free Compress tool you can do it right in your browser — no signup, no uploads, and your file never leaves your device.
What you need: just the PDF and a modern browser. The tool works on desktop and on your phone, so you can shrink a file right before attaching it to an email or uploading it to a form.
Step by step
- Open the Compress tool — Click the button below to open the free Compress PDF tool in your browser. Nothing to install, no account needed.
- Choose your PDF — Select the file from your device. It opens locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Pick a compression level — Choose a stronger setting for the smallest file, or a lighter one if you want to keep maximum image sharpness. For a 100KB target, start with the strongest option.
- Download and check the result — Download the compressed file and open it once. Check that the text is still readable and the images are acceptable — then use the new file wherever the size limit applies.
Tips for a better result
- Images decide the size. A text-only PDF is usually tiny already. If your file is huge, it is almost certainly the pictures — and that is exactly what compression targets.
- Remove pages first if you can. Deleting blank or unneeded pages before compressing gives you a head start toward 100KB.
- Scanned PDFs are the hardest case. A scan is one big image per page, so a 50-page scan may not reach 100KB without becoming hard to read. In that case, split it into parts instead.
- Always check readability after. Strong compression softens images. A quick look at the result beats discovering blurry text after you have already submitted a form.
- Start light if quality matters. Try a lighter setting first and check the size. Only go stronger if the file is still over the limit — you may hit 100KB without the harshest setting.

Frequently asked questions
Will compression make my text blurry?
No — text itself compresses without quality loss. What softens is embedded images, and only at stronger settings.
Can every PDF reach 100KB?
Not every one. Short, text-based PDFs usually can. Long image-heavy scans may bottom out above 100KB — splitting the file is then the better move.
Why is my scanned PDF still so large?
Because each scanned page is a full image. Compression shrinks those images, but a 50-page scan has fifty of them, so the floor is higher than for a typed document.
Is compression safe for official documents?
Yes. Compression changes how data is stored, not the words on the page. Just verify the result once before submitting it anywhere important.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The tool runs in any modern mobile browser, so you can compress a PDF on your phone just as you would on a computer.
What if my PDF is still over 100KB after the strongest compression?
First remove any unneeded pages, then compress again. If it is still too big, split the document into two parts — a two-part submission beats a rejected one.

1. The short version
TheEditPDF does not collect, store, or see your files. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser, on your own device. When you choose a PDF, it is read by JavaScript running locally — it is never uploaded to our servers, because we do not operate file-processing servers at all.
2. What we do not collect
- Your documents: PDFs, images, and spreadsheets you process never leave your device. We have no way to access them.
- Accounts: there is no signup and no login, so we hold no usernames, passwords, or profile data.
- File contents: text you extract, signatures you draw, and redactions you make exist only in your browser tab's memory until you download the result.
3. What is collected automatically
Like almost every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) may log basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and reliability. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising trackers, or fingerprinting scripts of our own. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first.
4. Third-party libraries
TheEditPDF loads open-source JavaScript libraries (for example pdf.js and pdf-lib) from public content delivery networks (CDNs). Those CDNs may see a standard request for the library file, exactly as when any site loads a font or script. They do not receive your documents.
5. Children
TheEditPDF is a general-purpose utility not directed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect no personal information from anyone.
6. Your control
Because files never reach us, there is nothing to request, correct, or delete on our side. Clearing your browser data removes any trace of your session from your device.
7. Changes to this policy
If we materially change how TheEditPDF handles information, we will update the date above and describe the change here.
8. Contact

1. What TheEditPDF is
TheEditPDF provides free, browser-based PDF tools — editing, signing, merging, converting, and more. The tools are offered "as is", without warranties of any kind, and may be changed or discontinued at any time.
2. How the tools work
All processing happens locally in your browser using open-source libraries. No file is uploaded to our servers. Because everything runs on your device, results depend on your browser and device capabilities.
3. Acceptable use
- Use TheEditPDF only on documents you own or are authorized to modify.
- Do not use the tools to forge signatures, falsify documents, remove watermarks or copyright notices you have no right to remove, or facilitate wrongdoing.
- Redaction in TheEditPDF burns black boxes into a flattened copy of each page; always verify the downloaded file before sharing sensitive documents.
- Password removal ("Unlock PDF") only works on files you are legally entitled to open, and it converts pages to images.
4. Signatures
Electronic signatures created with TheEditPDF are simple electronic marks, not certified digital signatures. Whether they are legally valid depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement between the parties — for high-stakes contracts, consult a lawyer.
5. Intellectual property
The TheEditPDF name, design, and original text on this site belong to its creator. The underlying processing libraries (pdf.js, pdf-lib, and others) remain the property of their respective open-source authors under their licenses.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TheEditPDF and its creator are not liable for any loss arising from use of the tools — including corrupted files, failed conversions, or documents shared with incomplete redactions. Always keep backups of important originals.
7. Changes
We may update these terms at any time; continued use of the site after changes means you accept them.
