How to Convert PDF to Word (DOCX)
Short answer: To convert a PDF to Word, open the PDF to Word tool, choose your PDF, convert it to a DOCX file, and download it for editing. Conversion runs in your browser, and your original PDF stays untouched.
A PDF is great for sharing, but terrible for editing. When you need to change the wording, reuse a paragraph, or update a document someone sent you as a PDF, you need the text in an editable format — and that usually means Word. Converting a PDF to a DOCX file gives you a document you can open, edit, and save like any Word file. With TheEditPDF's free PDF to Word tool, you can convert in your browser, with no signup and no uploads. One honest note up front: conversion is not magic. Simple documents usually come out cleanly, but complex layouts may need a quick check afterwards — and scanned PDFs, which are really pictures of text, need OCR first (more on that below).
Step by step
- Open the tool — Open the PDF to Word tool in your browser. It works on desktop and on your phone, with nothing to install.
- Choose your PDF — Select the file from your device. It opens locally in your browser, so your document is never uploaded to a server and your original PDF stays untouched.
- Convert the file — Start the conversion. The tool reads the text in your PDF and builds a DOCX document you can edit.
- Download and check the result — Download the DOCX file, open it in Word or a similar editor, and read through it once. Check headings, tables, and lists especially — a quick pass now catches anything the conversion handled differently, and you can fix it directly in Word.
Tips for a better result
- Always check the converted file. Treat conversion as a head start, not a finished job. A few minutes of checking — especially tables, columns, and lists — gives you a document you can trust.
- Scanned PDFs need OCR first. If your PDF is a scan, it contains pictures of text, not real text, so conversion alone will not extract it. Run it through the OCR tool first to recognize the text, then convert the result.
- Keep your original PDF. Your original is never changed by the tool. Keep it as your reference copy while you edit the Word version.
- Fix styles once, then reuse. If the converted document's fonts or spacing look slightly off, set them right once in Word — then save it as your clean master copy for future edits.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to convert PDF to Word?
No. The PDF to Word tool is free and works without signup. Just open the tool, choose your file, and convert.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion runs 100% in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.
Will the formatting stay exactly the same?
Not always. Simple documents usually convert cleanly, but complex layouts — multi-column pages, unusual tables, special fonts — may shift slightly. Always open the DOCX file and check it; anything that moved can be fixed directly in Word.
What if my PDF is a scan?
A scanned PDF is an image, not text, so it cannot be converted directly. Use the OCR tool first to recognize the text in the scan, then convert the OCR result to Word.
Is the converted file really editable?
Yes. The output is a standard DOCX file that opens in Word and other word processors. You can edit the text, change the formatting, and save it like any Word document.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in any modern browser, including phones and tablets. Editing the resulting DOCX file is easiest on a device with a word processor installed, but conversion itself works anywhere.

1. The short version
TheEditPDF does not collect, store, or see your files. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser, on your own device. When you choose a PDF, it is read by JavaScript running locally — it is never uploaded to our servers, because we do not operate file-processing servers at all.
2. What we do not collect
- Your documents: PDFs, images, and spreadsheets you process never leave your device. We have no way to access them.
- Accounts: there is no signup and no login, so we hold no usernames, passwords, or profile data.
- File contents: text you extract, signatures you draw, and redactions you make exist only in your browser tab's memory until you download the result.
3. What is collected automatically
Like almost every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) may log basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and reliability. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising trackers, or fingerprinting scripts of our own. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first.
4. Third-party libraries
TheEditPDF loads open-source JavaScript libraries (for example pdf.js and pdf-lib) from public content delivery networks (CDNs). Those CDNs may see a standard request for the library file, exactly as when any site loads a font or script. They do not receive your documents.
5. Children
TheEditPDF is a general-purpose utility not directed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect no personal information from anyone.
6. Your control
Because files never reach us, there is nothing to request, correct, or delete on our side. Clearing your browser data removes any trace of your session from your device.
7. Changes to this policy
If we materially change how TheEditPDF handles information, we will update the date above and describe the change here.
8. Contact
Questions about this policy can be sent through the contact details published on the TheEditPDF homepage.

1. What TheEditPDF is
TheEditPDF provides free, browser-based PDF tools — editing, signing, merging, converting, and more. The tools are offered "as is", without warranties of any kind, and may be changed or discontinued at any time.
2. How the tools work
All processing happens locally in your browser using open-source libraries. No file is uploaded to our servers. Because everything runs on your device, results depend on your browser and device capabilities.
3. Acceptable use
- Use TheEditPDF only on documents you own or are authorized to modify.
- Do not use the tools to forge signatures, falsify documents, remove watermarks or copyright notices you have no right to remove, or facilitate wrongdoing.
- Redaction in TheEditPDF burns black boxes into a flattened copy of each page; always verify the downloaded file before sharing sensitive documents.
- Password removal ("Unlock PDF") only works on files you are legally entitled to open, and it converts pages to images.
4. Signatures
Electronic signatures created with TheEditPDF are simple electronic marks, not certified digital signatures. Whether they are legally valid depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement between the parties — for high-stakes contracts, consult a lawyer.
5. Intellectual property
The TheEditPDF name, design, and original text on this site belong to its creator. The underlying processing libraries (pdf.js, pdf-lib, and others) remain the property of their respective open-source authors under their licenses.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TheEditPDF and its creator are not liable for any loss arising from use of the tools — including corrupted files, failed conversions, or documents shared with incomplete redactions. Always keep backups of important originals.
7. Changes
We may update these terms at any time; continued use of the site after changes means you accept them.
