How to Edit a PDF Online for Free
Short answer: To edit a PDF for free, open the PDF editor, choose your PDF, and click any existing text to edit it in place — the editor samples the original font, size, and color so your change blends in. You can also add new text, images, shapes, and signatures. Everything happens in your browser, with no signup and no uploads.
Editing a PDF used to mean one of two bad options: pay for expensive software, or convert the file to something else and rebuild it from scratch. Neither is necessary anymore. A modern browser-based PDF editor lets you open the file, click the text you want to change, and fix it directly — the same way you would edit a document. TheEditPDF's free PDF editor works exactly like that, and it runs entirely in your browser: no signup, no installation, and your file is never uploaded to a server. This guide walks you through editing text, adding new content, and signing — and it is honest about the one case where editing does not work: scanned pages, which are pictures of text rather than real text (more on that below).
Step by step
- Open the editor — Open the free PDF editor in your browser. It works on desktop and on your phone, with nothing to install.
- Choose your PDF — Select the file from your device. It opens locally in your browser, so your document is never uploaded to a server and your original file stays untouched.
- Click text to edit it in place — Click any existing text and type your change. The editor samples the original font, size, and color automatically, so edited text blends in with the rest of the page instead of standing out. You can also add new text boxes, images, shapes, highlights, links, form fields, and your signature anywhere on the page.
- Download and check the result — Download the edited file and open it once to check every change reads correctly. If anything looks off, fix it and download again — your original file is never changed, so you can always start over from it.
Tips for a better result
- Let the editor match the font. When you edit existing text, the automatic font, size, and color sampling is what makes the change invisible. If you add a brand-new text box instead, pick a font and size close to the surrounding text.
- Edit the text, not a picture of it. If a page is a scan, clicking it will not select any text — because there is no text there, only an image. Run scanned pages through the OCR tool first to recognize the text, then edit the result.
- Add content instead of covering it up. Need a note, a date, or a signature? Add it as new content on the page rather than pasting a white box over the old text — the result looks cleaner and stays searchable.
- Keep the original until you are happy. Editing creates a new file; your original PDF is untouched. Keep it as your master copy until you have checked the edited version.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to edit a PDF?
No. The PDF editor is free and works without signup. Just open the editor, choose your file, and start editing.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Editing runs 100% in your browser. Your file never leaves your device, which makes it suitable for contracts, medical, and legal documents.
Will edited text match the original font?
In most cases, yes. The editor samples the font, size, and color of the text you click, so your change blends in. Unusual or embedded fonts may fall back to a close match — check the downloaded file once to confirm.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Not directly. A scanned page is an image, not text, so there is nothing to click and edit. Use the OCR tool first to recognize the text in the scan, then edit the recognized document.
Can I add a signature while editing?
Yes. You can type, draw, or upload an image of your signature and place it anywhere on the page, then download the signed file.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The editor works in any modern browser, including phones and tablets. Fine text edits are easiest on a larger screen, but small fixes work fine on mobile.

1. The short version
TheEditPDF does not collect, store, or see your files. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser, on your own device. When you choose a PDF, it is read by JavaScript running locally — it is never uploaded to our servers, because we do not operate file-processing servers at all.
2. What we do not collect
- Your documents: PDFs, images, and spreadsheets you process never leave your device. We have no way to access them.
- Accounts: there is no signup and no login, so we hold no usernames, passwords, or profile data.
- File contents: text you extract, signatures you draw, and redactions you make exist only in your browser tab's memory until you download the result.
3. What is collected automatically
Like almost every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) may log basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and reliability. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising trackers, or fingerprinting scripts of our own. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first.
4. Third-party libraries
TheEditPDF loads open-source JavaScript libraries (for example pdf.js and pdf-lib) from public content delivery networks (CDNs). Those CDNs may see a standard request for the library file, exactly as when any site loads a font or script. They do not receive your documents.
5. Children
TheEditPDF is a general-purpose utility not directed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect no personal information from anyone.
6. Your control
Because files never reach us, there is nothing to request, correct, or delete on our side. Clearing your browser data removes any trace of your session from your device.
7. Changes to this policy
If we materially change how TheEditPDF handles information, we will update the date above and describe the change here.
8. Contact
Questions about this policy can be sent through the contact details published on the TheEditPDF homepage.

1. What TheEditPDF is
TheEditPDF provides free, browser-based PDF tools — editing, signing, merging, converting, and more. The tools are offered "as is", without warranties of any kind, and may be changed or discontinued at any time.
2. How the tools work
All processing happens locally in your browser using open-source libraries. No file is uploaded to our servers. Because everything runs on your device, results depend on your browser and device capabilities.
3. Acceptable use
- Use TheEditPDF only on documents you own or are authorized to modify.
- Do not use the tools to forge signatures, falsify documents, remove watermarks or copyright notices you have no right to remove, or facilitate wrongdoing.
- Redaction in TheEditPDF burns black boxes into a flattened copy of each page; always verify the downloaded file before sharing sensitive documents.
- Password removal ("Unlock PDF") only works on files you are legally entitled to open, and it converts pages to images.
4. Signatures
Electronic signatures created with TheEditPDF are simple electronic marks, not certified digital signatures. Whether they are legally valid depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement between the parties — for high-stakes contracts, consult a lawyer.
5. Intellectual property
The TheEditPDF name, design, and original text on this site belong to its creator. The underlying processing libraries (pdf.js, pdf-lib, and others) remain the property of their respective open-source authors under their licenses.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TheEditPDF and its creator are not liable for any loss arising from use of the tools — including corrupted files, failed conversions, or documents shared with incomplete redactions. Always keep backups of important originals.
7. Changes
We may update these terms at any time; continued use of the site after changes means you accept them.
