How to Merge PDF Files into One PDF
Short answer: To merge PDF files into one PDF for free, open TheEditPDF's Merge tool, add two or more PDFs, arrange them in the order you want, and download the single combined PDF. Everything runs in your browser — no signup, no uploads, and your files never leave your device. Your original files stay untouched, so you can re-merge in a different order any time.
Separate PDFs are a daily frustration: a report split across three files, an application that needs a CV, a cover letter and certificates in one document, or chapters of a book saved one by one. Sending them individually looks messy and invites the reader to open them in the wrong order.
Merging fixes that in under a minute. With TheEditPDF's free Merge tool, you stack your files in the order you want and get one clean PDF back. Everything runs in your browser — no signup, no uploads, and your files never leave your device.
What you need: just the PDF files and a modern browser. Gather the files first, decide their order, and the merge itself takes seconds. Common uses include job applications, expense reports, school assignments and legal bundles — anywhere one file is easier to handle than five.
Step by step
- Open the Merge tool — Click the button below to open the free Merge PDF tool. It works in any modern browser, with nothing to install.
- Add your PDF files — Select two or more PDFs from your device. They open locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Arrange the order — Drag the files into the order you want them to appear — for example, cover letter first, then CV, then certificates. The merged PDF follows exactly this order.
- Merge and download — Click merge, then download the single combined PDF. Your original files stay untouched, so you can re-merge in a different order any time.
Tips for a better result
- Order is everything. Take ten seconds to arrange files before merging — fixing the order afterwards means merging all over again.
- Different page sizes are fine. A mix of A4 and letter pages merges without a problem; each page keeps its own size.
- Remove what you do not need first. If one file has blank or unwanted pages, delete them before merging so the result stays clean.
- Unlock protected files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be merged until its password is removed — use the Unlock tool, then merge.
- Give the merged file a clear name. Something like “Application — Your Name” is far easier to find later than “merged-output.pdf”.

Frequently asked questions
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
As many as you need for a normal job — reports, chapters, or a full application pack. Very large batches may take a little longer in the browser.
Can I change the page order after merging?
The merged file follows the order you set before merging. To change it, just re-merge the originals in the new order — the originals are never altered.
Will bookmarks or links survive merging?
Page content, text and images carry over cleanly. Some interactive extras like bookmarks may not transfer, so check the result if they matter to you.
Does merging reduce quality?
No. Merging rearranges pages; it does not re-compress them, so text and images keep their original quality.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password first with the Unlock tool, then merge the unlocked file as normal.
Can I merge PDFs on my phone?
Yes. The tool runs in any modern mobile browser, so you can combine files on your phone and send the result straight on.

1. The short version
TheEditPDF does not collect, store, or see your files. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser, on your own device. When you choose a PDF, it is read by JavaScript running locally — it is never uploaded to our servers, because we do not operate file-processing servers at all.
2. What we do not collect
- Your documents: PDFs, images, and spreadsheets you process never leave your device. We have no way to access them.
- Accounts: there is no signup and no login, so we hold no usernames, passwords, or profile data.
- File contents: text you extract, signatures you draw, and redactions you make exist only in your browser tab's memory until you download the result.
3. What is collected automatically
Like almost every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) may log basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and reliability. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising trackers, or fingerprinting scripts of our own. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first.
4. Third-party libraries
TheEditPDF loads open-source JavaScript libraries (for example pdf.js and pdf-lib) from public content delivery networks (CDNs). Those CDNs may see a standard request for the library file, exactly as when any site loads a font or script. They do not receive your documents.
5. Children
TheEditPDF is a general-purpose utility not directed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect no personal information from anyone.
6. Your control
Because files never reach us, there is nothing to request, correct, or delete on our side. Clearing your browser data removes any trace of your session from your device.
7. Changes to this policy
If we materially change how TheEditPDF handles information, we will update the date above and describe the change here.
8. Contact
Questions about this policy can be sent through the contact details published on the TheEditPDF homepage.

1. What TheEditPDF is
TheEditPDF provides free, browser-based PDF tools — editing, signing, merging, converting, and more. The tools are offered "as is", without warranties of any kind, and may be changed or discontinued at any time.
2. How the tools work
All processing happens locally in your browser using open-source libraries. No file is uploaded to our servers. Because everything runs on your device, results depend on your browser and device capabilities.
3. Acceptable use
- Use TheEditPDF only on documents you own or are authorized to modify.
- Do not use the tools to forge signatures, falsify documents, remove watermarks or copyright notices you have no right to remove, or facilitate wrongdoing.
- Redaction in TheEditPDF burns black boxes into a flattened copy of each page; always verify the downloaded file before sharing sensitive documents.
- Password removal ("Unlock PDF") only works on files you are legally entitled to open, and it converts pages to images.
4. Signatures
Electronic signatures created with TheEditPDF are simple electronic marks, not certified digital signatures. Whether they are legally valid depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement between the parties — for high-stakes contracts, consult a lawyer.
5. Intellectual property
The TheEditPDF name, design, and original text on this site belong to its creator. The underlying processing libraries (pdf.js, pdf-lib, and others) remain the property of their respective open-source authors under their licenses.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TheEditPDF and its creator are not liable for any loss arising from use of the tools — including corrupted files, failed conversions, or documents shared with incomplete redactions. Always keep backups of important originals.
7. Changes
We may update these terms at any time; continued use of the site after changes means you accept them.
