How to Sign a PDF Online for Free
Short answer: To sign a PDF for free, open the Sign PDF tool, choose your PDF, create your signature by typing it, drawing it, or uploading an image of it, click on the page where the signature should go, then drag to position it. Download the signed PDF — no account, no watermark, no upload to a server.
A contract, a job offer, a rental agreement, a school form — sooner or later, someone sends you a PDF and asks you to sign it. Printing it, signing by hand, scanning it back, and emailing it is slow and needs a printer and a scanner. Signing online takes a minute: you open the PDF, add your signature where it belongs, and download a signed copy. Electronic signatures are widely accepted for everyday agreements, though some regulated documents may have stricter requirements — for those, check what the recipient needs before you sign. With TheEditPDF's free Sign PDF tool, you can sign in your browser, with no signup and no uploads.
Step by step
- Open the tool — Open the free Sign PDF tool in your browser. It works on desktop and on your phone, with nothing to install.
- Choose your PDF — Select the file from your device. It opens locally in your browser, so your document is never uploaded to a server and your original file stays untouched.
- Create your signature — Create your signature in the way that suits you: type it in a handwriting-style font, draw it with your mouse or finger, or upload an image of your handwritten signature. Pick the version that looks most like your real signature.
- Place it and download — Click on the page where the signature should go, then drag it into position and resize it to fit the signature line. Download the signed PDF and open it once to check the signature sits exactly where it should — if it is off, adjust it and download again, since your original file is never changed.
Tips for a better result
- Put it on the line, not near it. A signature floating above or below the line looks careless. Drag it until it sits naturally on the signature line, at a size similar to a handwritten signature.
- Use your real signature style. A typed name in a script font is fine for informal forms, but for contracts, a drawn or uploaded image of your actual signature looks more convincing.
- Sign every place that needs it. Some documents have a signature box on more than one page. Flip through the whole file before downloading so you do not miss one.
- Keep the original until you are happy. Signing creates a new file; your original PDF is untouched. Keep it until you have checked the signed copy.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to sign a PDF?
No. The Sign PDF tool is free and works without signup. Just open the tool, choose your file, and sign.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Signing runs 100% in your browser. Your file never leaves your device, which matters for contracts and personal documents.
Are electronic signatures valid?
For most everyday agreements — job offers, rental forms, freelance contracts — electronic signatures are widely accepted. Some regulated or notarized documents may require a qualified or certified signature; check the recipient's requirements for those.
Can I use my real handwritten signature?
Yes. You can upload an image of your handwritten signature and place it on the page, or draw it directly with your mouse or finger.
Can I sign in more than one place?
Yes. Add a signature to each page or box that needs one before you download the finished file.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in any modern browser, including phones and tablets. Drawing a signature with your finger on a phone screen works well.

1. The short version
TheEditPDF does not collect, store, or see your files. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser, on your own device. When you choose a PDF, it is read by JavaScript running locally — it is never uploaded to our servers, because we do not operate file-processing servers at all.
2. What we do not collect
- Your documents: PDFs, images, and spreadsheets you process never leave your device. We have no way to access them.
- Accounts: there is no signup and no login, so we hold no usernames, passwords, or profile data.
- File contents: text you extract, signatures you draw, and redactions you make exist only in your browser tab's memory until you download the result.
3. What is collected automatically
Like almost every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) may log basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and reliability. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising trackers, or fingerprinting scripts of our own. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first.
4. Third-party libraries
TheEditPDF loads open-source JavaScript libraries (for example pdf.js and pdf-lib) from public content delivery networks (CDNs). Those CDNs may see a standard request for the library file, exactly as when any site loads a font or script. They do not receive your documents.
5. Children
TheEditPDF is a general-purpose utility not directed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect no personal information from anyone.
6. Your control
Because files never reach us, there is nothing to request, correct, or delete on our side. Clearing your browser data removes any trace of your session from your device.
7. Changes to this policy
If we materially change how TheEditPDF handles information, we will update the date above and describe the change here.
8. Contact
Questions about this policy can be sent through the contact details published on the TheEditPDF homepage.

1. What TheEditPDF is
TheEditPDF provides free, browser-based PDF tools — editing, signing, merging, converting, and more. The tools are offered "as is", without warranties of any kind, and may be changed or discontinued at any time.
2. How the tools work
All processing happens locally in your browser using open-source libraries. No file is uploaded to our servers. Because everything runs on your device, results depend on your browser and device capabilities.
3. Acceptable use
- Use TheEditPDF only on documents you own or are authorized to modify.
- Do not use the tools to forge signatures, falsify documents, remove watermarks or copyright notices you have no right to remove, or facilitate wrongdoing.
- Redaction in TheEditPDF burns black boxes into a flattened copy of each page; always verify the downloaded file before sharing sensitive documents.
- Password removal ("Unlock PDF") only works on files you are legally entitled to open, and it converts pages to images.
4. Signatures
Electronic signatures created with TheEditPDF are simple electronic marks, not certified digital signatures. Whether they are legally valid depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement between the parties — for high-stakes contracts, consult a lawyer.
5. Intellectual property
The TheEditPDF name, design, and original text on this site belong to its creator. The underlying processing libraries (pdf.js, pdf-lib, and others) remain the property of their respective open-source authors under their licenses.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TheEditPDF and its creator are not liable for any loss arising from use of the tools — including corrupted files, failed conversions, or documents shared with incomplete redactions. Always keep backups of important originals.
7. Changes
We may update these terms at any time; continued use of the site after changes means you accept them.
